Some harem mangas I’ve read

Since I have a really hard time imagining movement in action genred mangas, I only read this genre. Also note that I am not a strict rater; if it gets my interest, has a good plot or makes me laugh, has good art, or leaves me wanting to continue reading, I’ll just give it a ten. Here’s a list of some manga that I’ve read so far this summer, which might be of some interest to you.

1.) Nagasarete Airantou

I’ve been reading this chapter by chapter actually, and what impresses me the most is the artwork. There is no linear plot; the story is in each chapter or at most five. Probably the most poignant features of this manga would be the way the animals are drawn, because they look rather cute.

This manga talks about a 14 year old guy who one day decides to run away from his home after being bullied by his dad about being a weakling in that he is unable to beat him in a kendo duel (What a fucking pussy. If I were him, I would just attack him in his sleep or some shit.). He travels on a ship and then accidently falls down into the ocean and ends up in some island inhabited by females only. Thereafter, he starts coexsting with them and end up doing rather comical and sometimes, ridiculous stunts with the natives. Lots of fan service and comedy if you’re into this genre.

10/10 for artwork and good comedy

2.) Detroit Metal City (not a harem)

After watching the anime, I couldn’ t just get enough of this godly piece of work. Topped as my #1 anime/manga as of now.

This manga talks about some shy and aloof country guy who moves to Tokyo to start a pop band, but he ends up joining a band called “Detroit Metal City.” When he goes on stage, he becomes a totally different person who is violent, vile, or just plain depraved. Now, this is a pure comedy genre, and what makes it so great in my opinion is the good lulz it gives. The situations he ends up in, and how he deals with other people when he’s on stage is just hilarious. You’ll find it especially more funny when he’s normal and suddenly gets mad and turns into his alter ego and starts wrecking chaos. Good stuff.

10/10 for best comedy I’ve seen so far

3.) Watashitachi no Tamura-kun

I was a bit hesitant initially in deciding to read this, because I thought it was too short or whatnot, when I first looked at the total chapters, which have 20 chapters excluding the irrelevant side stories. After I read the first chapter, I was really intrigued and “hooked” to it. Certainly, this author is a really great writer since she can get people’s interesting in her works almost instantly. After I finished reading all 20 chapters, I really shot bricks out of my ass. I thought: “Holy shit, this is a fucking masterpiece.” I have an affinity for mangas/animes with a really good plot, and this one is just one of them. I then took a look at the author, and turns out that it’s the same author who wrote the light novels for Toradora (Toradora was written after this.). This author is really good at this genre.

This manga is an adaptation of the light novel and talks about a 16 year old guy who first meets a girl with a strange demeanor who doesn’t want to open with anyone whom he later falls in love with. Thereafter, some she moves away, and he enters a high school, where he encounters another girl who starts getting attracted to him. Then all hell breaks loose as the first girl comes back and starts questioning him about the second girl. This manga pretty much has the same motifs as Toradora but in a compressed form.

10/10 for having one of the best plots

4.) Ayu Mayu

I hate incest, but wincest is good.

This manga talks about a guy whose sister left him when he was in the orphanage because she was adopted by someone. Then ten years later, he found the house that the sister was residing in and two girls which he cannot discern his sister from. Also, other people end up coming in and messing with them which makes it more interesting. Pretty good stories with good character development in their relationships with one another.

10/10 for motivating me to read it more

5.) Ai Kora

This was a rather interesting manga. First, when I read it, I instantly thought: “Hmm, this seems rather familiar.” This manga is somewhat like a spin off of Love Hina but lacks a linear plot. But in some aspects, they are similar because the protagonist ends up in some ridiculous situations or is able to do things with his uncanny abilities.

A guy who moves to Tokyo to attend school ends up living in a girls dorm because the dorm he was assigned to live in was destroyed. He has a fetish for human parts, and conveniently finds all his ideal body parts in each of the girls that he lives with. Throughout the manga, the chapters are about his interactions with the girls in various situations. Made me laugh a bit sometimes, and what I thought the best parts were when he always does something ridiculous due to some misunderstanding.

8/10 – Sometimes, bullshit like ninjas/detectives do not really fit well into stories with in these genres.

6.) Mel Kano

The title is Japanese for “internet girlfriend.” Really, I didn’t know they existed, or if they actually do since it is just a manga.

This manga talks about some guy who met reguarly on a website with chatting, as well as e-mail, with some girl.  After half a year passed by, they decided to meet, and when they actually did, they both surprised each other by their actual personalities. Afterwards, the couple end up working with the company of the website that they met on, and some relationship problems start (It’s a romance manga after all.).

10/10 for good artwork and original plot (never seen something like this before)
