Maria+Holic – 05 – Chronicles of Friendship
A few things to clear up: Kanako had a big nose bleed staring at Ayari. Seeing Mariya act all prissy and stuff reversed it. Amazing since she normally would have a bigger one seeing the cute trap. But that’s strange, don’t you think? This is showing “change” in people. In fact, I sense some sort of role reversal in the near future. Or maybe Kanako will turn into a masochist. Anything can really happen with some imagination. Mariya also seems like a loner, right? He probably doesn’t have any real girl friends and hence can only “control” them. At least, that’s how he sees it. I’m sure that a lot of people consider him their friends, but he just doesn’t see that because of the sex difference. He’s generally popular with the ladies as they think he’s a lady as well… but that doesn’t seem right. He has to have some friend to maintain some sanity, right? Or maybe it’s only Matsurika. Maybe he’s just too shy. That’s normal as well. God, on the other hand, seems to have some-what equivalent authority over Mariya – so that kind of clears my belief that she knows he’s a trap.
The only thing I can say is that this episode was revealing on friends. Friends is the theme in this episode, in other words. Kanako, Sachi, and Yuzuru were trying to become friends with Kiri – someone who doesn’t have any real friends. It kind of made me chuckled since Mariya told Kanako to just ask Kiri to be friends. She didn’t think it was that easy but well, that pretty was disproved. Which leads me to my next point: Foreshadowing. Things are starting to “be placed in order”, in a comical kind of way. I noticed that whatever was said in the past was pretty much happening in the future. Like what God said: Tragic past. Kanako had a tragic past but it wasn’t really revealed to us yet – but I’m sure it’s as tragic as any other person’s past. Heck, it might even be Mariya who had the tragic past. In the last picture, it really impacted me. It really saddened me to see that he was rejecting friendship from others – rejecting acknowledgement. Matsruka’s just there to interrupt and insult and really, she has no reason for really being there. What’s her real role in this story? In the Manga, she is known to be rich and not be anthers maid, but she is. This kind of thing really draws me to the show.
First things first: Mariya knows that saying goodbye is painful. How does he know? I don’t think he’s a philosophical guy at all. I’m 80% sure that Mariya had a friend in the past who he had to separate with. This kind of explains why he’s reluctant to actually accept and/or make friends. He distances himself from others, in other words. But you know, Kanako left that bag of hers in the woods. To me, that’s like her leaving a friend outside – separating from her friend. Right when she gets it back in a locker, the tentacle bag returned. I felt that it foreshadowed old friends coming back. This sounds really reasonable to me because Kanako might just be the lost friend Mariya had, as I kept on saying in the past.
Seriously, I don’t think any other Anime has made me analyze it as much as this show. Maybe I’m just a bit paranoid because of all the analysis my English teacher gives me, but meh. No other show seems to have such things, if you ask me. It just has too many hints, if you want to know the truth. Too many foreshadowing as well. This show still rocks :)

Well, if you think about it, Mariya had to separate from all his friends that he made up until he became a trap. He wasn’t just a trap from the time he was born, he just became a trap to go to the all girls school. Surely he had friends before then, but he wasn’t allowed to see them anymore. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t really accept friendship, because he knows once he graduates, he’ll have to abandon them again.
Another thing, he can’t really be himself with his friends, like you should be able to with close friends, because, well he’s a trap. So even if he made friends, he’d still have to be putting on his charade anyway, so he couldn’t consider them real friends since they don’t know the real him.
As for Mariya being a long lost friend of Kanako’s, I have another theory on that, but I’m not sure if you’ve seen episode 6 yet, so I don’t want to spoil anything.
Ah, the typical High School life. Fearing the lost of friends is normal… so it’s understandable. Didn’t really think that much outside of the box. It makes sense in that aspect, but I’m going to argue that he can indeed act the way he wants. What he’s been doing is lying to people, when he could have looked like a lady AND acted like a girl who is a tom boy. That would be a more logical approach if you ask me. Which makes me think: Why’d he pick such a weak personality (lol Kallen [Code Geass])? He must have had more than one choice to “be who he wants to be”. He is not dumb and we can all see that – but don’t you agree that you could have showed them his real self, YET still trick them into being a girl?
Yet, I’m going to contradict what I’m saying by saying that Mariya probably pictured a girl to be like that and hence did that… or he watched Otoboku and yea :O
I’m going to watch episode 6 of Maria Holic and Kurokami on Monday. *shrugs*
