I shall pierce the heavens with toradora spoilers and rants

starting now.

The ending sucked more than anything. Instead of keeping up with their excellent tradition of high catharsis, they abandon it for some crappy attempt at a soft and sweet coda; the kind of fleeting epilogue we got in TTGL, LoGH, Fushigi Yuugi, etc. The problem was that Toradora never had the explosive catharsis which is the foundation for the soft coda. The kiss scene doesn’t count. If anything, Minorin’s final scenes were the closest it ever got, but again it fails because the most final, heightened catharsis is still neglected until the very end, the “I love you” line, and when it does come, it feel like it didn’t, and you’re still in a state of suspended animation, waiting for something to come, but it doesn’t.

At any rate, you’re supposed to end with the OP/ED, not pseudo-end, then bust out with this tiny post-ED snippet.

If anything, as Clannad just ended and what with all that discourse, this time I really feel like all that past emotional investment was instantaneously wasted. Oh I did get the story, the ending, when Taiga came back, but the emotions I were expecting were building up in tides, pushing against the dam, but the dam never broke, all the water kind of just fizzed the crap out. Disappointing. But I digressed – perhaps this is mostly my fault, perhaps for imbuing false hopes. Generic anime? No – generic viewer. Disappointing anime? No – disappointing viewer.

    I’m too :effort: to look up what the hell catharsis means, but I do kinda agree the last 5 or so minutes felt weird. The ED came too early. It should’ve been the events up to the ED, then the events like a year later or whatever it was, then the “suki da,” Taiga blushing, then hit us with the ED, following up with Taiga being a little tsuntsun afterwards, if they really had to.

    It was kind of a catharsis around episode 16, to me, but later on it just started to… I don’t know. It didn’t bring up much things which made me feel like bawling or anything. It just made me watch it with a flat face, like this: 8|

    i liked the ending. the series didn’t really have a place for catharsis, at least in my mind, because it was always so emotionally upbeat already.

    the way they did the ending signaled continuation of their relationship, and so i found that fitting.

    @naza: catharsis = orgasm (basically)

    Wow, after reading this post I just have to commend, or rather just say something.

    After finish Toradora!, I feel like I want to throw something or just get mad at something but don’t know what to getting mad at.  It is not a bad ending/story, but I just feel…yeah.  Probaly exactly like what you said in this post.  I also feel like I’m watching this show just for the sake of finishing it for the last couple episodes.  And everyone is praising it, make me keep asking what’s wrong with me.  Well, maybe something is wrong with me, but looks like I’m not the only one getting this feeling.

    Yeah, it was 23 of episodes of awesome and then an episode of “WTF was that!?”. At least the finale was decent though.

    I only started having very high hopes approaching the midpoint, when the characters started getting interesting. However, the ending certainly didn’t disappoint me. I got a lot out of it, besides getting entertained.

    I don’t think that our two lovebirds needed a “cathartic” confession scene. They were ready to elope and get married last episode, for Christ’s sake! They have been living as a married couple for the best part of a year. They shared so many emotions, so many sweet moments together. They are already past the “I love you” stage. I felt content with the ending.
