End of 2008 – Languid Year
Interesting “Fact”
Ok, so I was talking to my friend and he brought up a very interesting point: In most (if not all) romance genre Anime, there is a bloody sidekick – either to support a love or to just be a clown. That person does NOT have to be a male character but tends to be male. Lets take the most recent one I blogged as an example: Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka. In Akane-iro, Junichi was indecisive about who he should really love when his sidekick, Fuyuhiko, reminded him about his love to Minato. In Da Capo (not II), the sidekick is Suginami, who is there to mess around. In School Days, it’s Taisuke; he clowned with Kotonoha (if you know what I mean). In Shakugan no Shana, there’s Itou who kind-of-sort-of-not-really supports Yoshida into retaining her love for Sakai. My friend also pointed out that the following Anime had sidekicks as well: Lamune, Clannad, ef ~tales of memory~, Gift, True Tears, etc… the list can probably go a looong way. But yea, that’s like an interesting fact to know/realize.
Code Geass is the best Anime I’ve watched this year. Literally. I’m not going to say that it is the best Anime or anything because seriously, I haven’t watched a lot of Anime this year. Who is my favorite character in this series? When I really think about it, I can’t say Lelouch. Even though he’s cool and has that awesome ability to control people, I cannot say he’s my favorite character. My favorite character is (you probably guessed it) Suzaka – Kururururururururugi Suzaka. A lot of people said that he’s a backstabber. I can’t argue with that but what I can argue about is that he was doing everything for the better of the world. I just can’t feel contempt toward a guy who does things like that just to make the world a better place.
One thing I thought was really cool was the Geass symbol. The thing I thought was pretty cool was that the stigma could be on any part of a person’s body (If you were an immortal) BUT that the Geass users (not immortal) had eyes which glowed red and had some sort of weird bird in it. In one way, it reminded me of Itachi’s (Naruto) Sharingan. A funny thing I remember was that in two episodes of Hayate no Gotoku, some sort of Geass user was introduced and he bloody controlled Nagi for some random reason. First time I saw Code Geass on another Anime and had no clue of its reference. I saw a large amount of posts in 4chan and it really made me wonder, “Why is it so popular? It doesn’t even look that nice with all that mecha and stuff.” After a friend of mines and an acquaintance said that it was a really good series, I took a shot at it. Best time I ever spent watching it. Episode after episode, I wanted more of it. Even now I still wish that another series will come out. I also read that an OVA MIGHT come out later… I hope that it’s true.
I loved Mai Hime and Mai Otome – it was full of fanservice and a triangle love and even had some sort of fighting in it. I loved to watch it and when I saw that S.ifr was out, I was happy and got it. When I watched it… I was disappointed. I didn’t feel any ‘KICK ASS’ feeling. For one thing, the characters are getting OLD! I’ve seen them way too many times and the way they make their appearance is just way too corny for me. The main character looks like Nao, but she acts nothing like her. She’s like… another Arika but a bit smarter. That wasn’t what broke the camel’s back. What broke the camel’s back was when they readded the bloody old plot of the main girl being a princess and an old guy who is a prince. Blatantly put, I sensed another “Old guy liking a loli” kind of shit. And that is not what I’m into :[ Mai Otome already showed that theme to me already, so I wouldn’t want to rewatch it again with different-yet-not-so-different characters.
With all that said, I’m still going to watch the last episode (3) when I have time. I’m just prolonging it right now since I’m not in the mood to actually go and watch this after seeing the first two episodes. I’ll probably do it when I’m totally bored and are out of other Anime to watch…
I thought that Murder Princess would be one of those… fanservice type of Anime. So, I watched it. To my amazement, there was barely any. There was barely any romance either (though you can probably say that it was like some sort of yuri). This Anime starts out with a violent girl, Pharis, and a princess, Alita (later known as Milano), who somehow had their body exchanged because they were in a life-death situation. Afterward, Pharis became Alita and vice versa. With that, Pharis had to protect the Alita’s kingdom. Before I go on, I must say that the episodes which came out were like a month apart or something. Nearly forgot about it every month it came out. Anyways, Pharis was a savor of the town and I thought it kicked ass because the princess could go Berserk like Kira in Gundam Seed… just that she can’t “tap” into it, I think.
Pharis had a whole lot of power and then Alita’s brother arrived… which I was (I must sadly admit) hoping for some incest-yet-not-incest. What I mean is that I was hoping that Alita’s brother would hit Pharis (or Pharis in Alita’s body). Didn’t happen. Instead, they brought in an enemy who wanted power to take over the world or something. I really can’t remember at this point except for the fact that the ending was nice. I don’t think the “Murder Princess” ever got back her real body. Kind of a downer but hey, it still had some good fighting. What would have made this series WAY better is if they started more bloody battles…
I thought that watching the Anime would be alright… but I guess it really isn’t. As the Anime gets closer and closer to the Manga’s chapters, it becomes more imminent that one chapter will split into 3+ episodes… maybe. If worse comes to worse, they’ll just throw at us all 15 episodes of fillers – horrible, horrible fillers. I used to enjoy watching both Naruto and Bleach from Dattebayo but now it just sucks. I’m not saying Dattebayo sucks, but Naruto and Bleach in general sucks. They’re a non-stop series of fighting but at the same time, they’re a non-stop series of fillers. I watched the latest episode of Naruto and I realized that it’s dumb to even continue watching Naruto. The show is too long with little fighting involved.
I’m not sure about you guys but I watched Naruto and Bleach mainly because it had a “unique” form of fighting and had a plot that was on track for a few long episodes. What happened now? They are just talking for hours on why one character is stronger than the other or how they can get more powerful. To be blatant, it was all a verbal dick fight. For Bleach, they were talking about Kurotsuchi’s ideals and of how easily he could defeat Szayel. Kenpachi is fighting with Nnoitra but let’s face it – they are both going to start to talk about how strong they are and why they are better than one another for half the episode. It’s just not worth my time to watch this anymore. I’m just going to read the Manga instead.

Tsubasa Chronicles: Tokyo Revelations 8.5/10
In the beginning I read xxxHOLIC and later stretched to Tsubasa Chronicles because it was related to one another. It kind of peeved me off since xxxHOLIC wasn’t focused on that much. In fact, I thought that Tsubasa Chronicles would be something unrelated to xxxHOLIC. One main reason that I didn’t read it was because it reminded me of Card Captor Sakura and other things chained to it. The hoster of this site, Usako, introduced me to Tokyo Revelations and after watching it, it changed my outlook of Tsubasa Chroncles all together. Pretty much afterward I just read the Manga and loved it. I loved it much more than xxxHOLIC; it was THAT much more better than xxxHOLIC. Though, I don’t think you can REALLY enjoy Tsubasa Chronicles until you’ve read xxxHOLIC as well. It explains why certain events happen, really.
What attracted me tot his show was that the “current” Syaoran who wasn’t imprisoned lost all emotions and became nearly invincible. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Callous guys who fight are what attracts me the most. Callousness is a big portion of what I like and what WOULD make it better is if Syaoran 2 (the fake one) started to enjoy fighting. After watching Tokyo Revelations, I wondered what would Syaoran 2 do after he collects all the feathers. Does he have a goal or is he just “programmed” to collect feathers for Fei Wong? And as far as I know, Fei Wong just wants the feathers to resurrect a loved one of his. The story continues to get better and better and literally follows the Manga. I didn’t watch Tsubasa Chronicles in general, but Tokyo Revelations followed the Manga pretty clearly.
The Manga was what I first saw – not the Anime or the novel. I liked the Manga better because the pictures were much more… cute and “accurate”. I will thank Halem for this because I never really cared for or noticed that Taiga’s body is smaller than her own head. But as the Anime is more ahead than the Manga, I stuck with the Anime. What would have been better is if the artist was the artist of Hayate no Gotoku or Code Geass or something better. But I’m not exactly complaining; I like the art just think that it could have been better.
In all truth, after seeing 13 episodes of Toradora I have to say that Minori doesn’t love or want to love Takasu. I mean, every time Takasu tries to mention it she changes the topic immediately. Well, you can reason that she did it because she doesn’t know how to be a girlfriend and I can agree with that. Just that that seems to be a really… weak reason which doesn’t exactly support Minori’s personality of trying new things and overcoming her weaknesses. Ami just seems to be a watcher – she doesn’t really want to love anyone nor does she want to be loved. I guess you can call her a materialistic girl. But one thing has been bothering me for a while: Why is Ami still in THAT school when she could be doing more modeling elsewhere. It’s like a big controversy to me. After watching episode 13, I wondered if Kitamaru still likes Taiga. I mean, he asked her to dance with a shy face but does that still mean he likes her or what? Taiga previous “admits” that the dream she had could have been a foreshadowing of how she’s going to marry Takasu. In I’m sure most people already know that such thing is plausible and will happen. Takasu already overtreats Taiga and cares for her more than his “fake love” to Minori. We all know what will be the end of this, but we are now waiting for how it ascends to it.

Hah, everyone says that about Toradora, but I’m still on my guard about the Ryuuji/Taiga relationship. I guess so I don’t get disappointed if it doesn’t happen, but I still can’t help but feel that they might not go that direction. The entire time they’ve built it up as being friends, so I’m concerned that they might keep it that way, so I’m trying not to get my hopes up for something that won’t happen. I’ve had enough shipping disappointment already.
I’m so unbelievably thankful to Code Geass that if I could give it an 11/10, I would. Code Geass brought me into the anime scene in the first place and introduced me to the aniblogosphere. It’s one anime I’ll never be able to forget. And not just because of that, it’s an awesome anime in its own right, although I felt, like many others, that R2 really started to spin out of control :|
Good job on rating Bleach and Naruto. Haha.
