I am vengeance…..I am the night….I….AM…..DIO!

22 : A DROP CALLED ETERNAL

First and foremost, this was one of those episodes that was extremely satisfying despite the lack of a fight scene. We got a few answers, but most of all, the ball is really starting to roll for the final coup de grâce that is Casshern Sins. Did I mention that this episode was visually stunning? Not necessarily in terms of animation (which was really up there) but in terms of palette. Casshern Sins really enjoys playing up the primary colors significance by surrounding them with dull hues. This episode really kicked the color sophistication up a notch and made simple shots that we’ve seen before actually quite breathtaking.

Ringo is running downhill in desperation. She slips several times while calling out for Casshern. Lyuze catches her and the two sit on the edge of a cliff looking off. The scenery is rich and alive. A sign that Luna’s reach is beginning to effect the dying world more and more. However, the sky is grey and churning. One wonders if this storm is coming or going.

Back at Luna’s castle we see Leda embracing Dio. They are leaning against a rusted mirror. Leda tells Dio that they have no more worries. They have Luna now and the world will be healed. However, Leda believes that not everyone is fit to recieve Luna’s blood. She says that there can only be a select few who will be privileged. Dio sneers at her covetousness. He rebukes Leda’s attempts to have him visit Luna. Leda laughs and eerily questions “Has the boy become a man?”

She looks to her reflection for solace and goes to meet Luna in her chamber. Luna welcomes her with serene detachment. Leda threatens Luna and demands her blood. 1 Luna gives her a small sample of her blood and as it rolls down Leda’s mouth we see that her eye is healed.

The story shifts to Casshern. Casshern is hanging like a dripping piece of meat from one shackled arm. His blood is spilling onto the castle floor while he yelps and screams in pain. Dio looks on and reiterates that Casshern is healing himself. Despite the raw beating that Casshern took, he will return completely back to his perfect form.

Bring me your Minmays….your Ranka Lees….and your Sheryl Nomes!

B-dubs! I mean Braiking Boss! and….strange elven Zentradi man? Anyway, just as we all assumed, B-dubs is up to something. Him and Elftradi man are mak’n it Indiana Jones style on the topography and appear to be digging up hidden technology for something.

He totally worked as a transvestite clown to pay off college loans.

I smell an ultimate weapon in the making. If it’s 1. ominous 2. You have to dig it up out of the ground….at night and 3. you’re surrounded by gener-a-bot henchmen….it’s probably an ultimate weapon.

Flash back to the former cyclopean Leda. She’s borderline creepily admiring her new perfect reflection in the aforementioned creepy mirror. 2 She rubs her stomach and turns to face dio. They embrace, but Dio’s mind is elsewhere. She says that she wonders if they can create a new life. Dio looks astounded and comments “You still want that?” He then tells Leda not to touch Casshern and that he will be leaving the castle. Leda threatens that Dio is becoming an obstacle. She looks into the mirror and her eye shatters into fragments.

Lyuze goes after Casshern and takes down a few more Robot cronies. However, mid battle she looks on and sees Dio carrying the mangled form of Casshern. Needless to say, Lyuze is confounded.

Leda goes running back to Luna. Luna’s room is no longer blue, but a vibrant red. Luna claims that the blood she gave earlier may not be enough to make Leda look perfect, but that Leda will live forever. Leda eirly states if she is to live forever she must be beautiful. Luna says that she does not mind. She will give more blood, but that it will be painful. Leda lunges forward and slices across both of Luna’s hands. The room turns even more red. Leda sinks to kneel before Luna and in a rapturous state she falls down into the water. Luna sheds tears and states that it might have been too much healing. Leda twitches on the ground in pain. Looking over her, Luna states that eternal life is beautiful. “I will not kill like my old self.” Huh…more evidence that the previous Luna was Luna, but that she has changed. She begins to cry as Leda and Casshern’s screams can be heard.

Dio, don’t blame your STD’s on ruin….

Luna stands among her blue fields of blossoms.

Casshern is done healing.

Dio stands in the rain, the syphili….I mean ruin is visable on his leg.

The rain comes and leaves.

Dio and Casshern reach the conclusion that they are not truly enemies and that they respect one another. Dio tells casshern that he needs to fight him. He is able to live through the decay in order to fight Casshern again. Dio states that he doesn’t want to lose his hunger to fight. If he becomes immortal there will be no point. Now, he has more purpose and more value than Casshern because he is living earnestly. Casshern wonders if he really feels any joy in living.

Loved the episode. I’ve never felt so good about being a transient.

Annotations

1. There's this interesting camera shot here where we see the two characters from far away and Luna turns hot red/pink. I almost didn't see it the first time. A subtle representation that she was tapping into her life force? Probably symbolic for when Luna is cut. []
2. The Last Unicorn much? When the clock strikes the right time. []
