Casshern Sins 23 – super saiyan sighting
Kaaameee haaaameeee….you know the rest.
B-dubs (Braiking Boss) and his posse are on the march towards Luna. His soldiers are crumbling but venture forth following their leader. They feel that following B-dubs gives them a purpose and will be the end to ruin. B-dubs takes a moment to himself and lets his cape flap in the wind most awesomely. He vows that he will not dig another grave for anyone.
Dio and Casshern are right where we left them, locked in a battle to the finish. This is not a battle about who lives or dies, but instead, a battle dealing with what it is to be alive. The music crescendos and there’s a really nice slow motion effect utilized to draw out the poignancy of the moment. Dio feels truly alive while he fights.
In sleep she sang to me….
We find Leda caressing ruined objects in a mass grave of robots. She hears a child weeping and speaks soothing words. The camera pans back and we see that Leda’s right half has mutated. Leda finally looks at a reflective surface and sees the changes. She is horrified and screams to Luna. “How dare you do this!” Then we see that the crying child was Ringo. Both of them realize that they are not alone and they share a moment. Leda approaches Ringo with killing intent, but she collapses weeping instead. Ringo reaches out a hand and touches her changed face. She asks if it hurts and we see a flashback of Leda in Luna’s blood. Leda recoils from Ringo’s touch and in a moment of awe says “You’re….” but the impasse is interrupted by Lyuze. Leda runs away – ashamed of her appearance.
Sloooowwww Mooootttiiiooooonnn
Team Casshern…sans Casshern take a moment to regroup. Oji and Ringo are once again reunited….but no slow motion this time…damn. They realize that Luna’s robots threw Leda away for dead/ruin. Ringo seems connected to Leda and mentions that she was crying. Leda takes off in a blind rage to find Luna. Luna looks at her with disgust and claims that for an eternal being she still has the stench of decay.
Casshern and Dio are meanwhile fighting even more desperately. It’s clear that both sides are taking a beating. Dio has a genuine Super Saijan moment and his helmit snaps off from fighting spirit. The two continue their battle until casshern cuffs Dio in the face (awesome move btw.) and Dio gets him square in the torsoe. Dio then smiles and says that he’s won. He has killed Casshern. But…alas, we’re all more worried about Dio than Casshern.
Luna and Leda are caught in one nasty face off. Leda finds her current state unforgivable. Luna duck and covers but then in a surprising twist manages to raise a blade and let Leda impale herself on it. In a rather disturbing moment Luna hold the blade steady as it drives into Leda deeper, smiling while she does it. Casshern appears and holds Leda. He warmly states that Dio asked him to save her. We then flashback to the battle between Casshern and Dio. Dio’s arm is firmly impaled within Casshern, but it begins to crack and turn to stone. He turns away as the victor and his arm snaps off. He looks off into the distance and tells Casshern to save Leda.

Hush Billy…they’re just sleeping.
Leda loses her will to fight and her face fills with dispair. She leaves. Luna says that the only choice for eternal beings is to stay with her. She asks Casshern to make a kingdom with her. Casshern refuses and says that there is life here, but no one is living. He looks to Dio and Leda as two beacons of vitality and mourns his own immortal fate.
(cue that song that usually ruins everything…but was fine this episode)
Luna looks at Casshern with disappointment. She says that she sees nothing in him now and that he was beautiful the day he came to kill her. That day all of the death inside of her flowed out and she was released from death. Casshern feels that he is now immortal, but now he feels regret. Team Casshern leave Luna together as a surrogate family. We see Leda and Dio frozen together in a nostalgic peace. Leda cries a tear of blood and holds him while they rest for eternity.
B-dubs approaches Luna through the mist. The two of them greet each other. Together they will begin a kindom and once again Braiking Boss will rule the world. Luna says that she’s been wating for him ant that their will create a great empire. The colors then shift from the classic blue and red of Casshern to a more ominious green, red and purple.
THOUGHTS
I felt that Leda and Dio had a really well done tragic demise. Dio managed to stay himself up until the end and Leda discovered what was really important to her…and that Ringo is probably her child? The last shot of them together was befitting a tragic couple. It was also interesting that Luna found Casshern beautiful when he came to kill her. The fact that she then bled ruin onto the world was helpful and in a twisted way explains why Casshern and her are immortal. I’m hoping to learn even a few more tid bits about Luna, but if not, then at least they have generally addressed the issue.
Also, I found it interesting that B-dubs wants to join forces with Luna. Yes, it makes sense, but didn’t he send Casshern to kill her in the first place? I hope that this ends up being a plot twist and not just B-dubs using Luna as a tool. I’m pleased with the direction the show is taking, I’ve got a desire to go back and rewatch a few of the more poigniant episodes to maybe flesh out the plot a little better. Always a good thing.
