Axis Powers Hetalia 08 – They drop the F-Bomb

This feels unnecessarily caustic
You know, as hard as I try, I just can’t wrap my head around the concept behind exactly what happened here. Instead I will lovingly refer to this phenomenon as the #uck box. Did letters get obscured? Is this really a bomb of the F variety? Frankly, I don’t care. It made laugh hard enough that I’ve denounced all civilized explanations. In other news, this was a really fun episode. It seemed really short in comparison to the other ones….probably was shorter…Hetalia episodes seem to be shrinking by the minute…literally.
The episode starts out with the mysterious ominous illusive phone shot from last week. Germany eyes it wearily. Behold his Deutsch Weariness in the screen shot above. And of course, with Hetalia on the other end of the line, all of his worries were well suited. So Hetalia hilariously pleads to Germany for help. He was apparently minding his own business and was offered paaaastaaaaa by a stranger who….GASP….instead fed him hamburgers. (should so have been spam, should so have been spam!)
America “captures” Hetalia a la scoobie doo and then after he and the UK deal with him for a short period of time decided to promptly mail him back to Germany. In the #uck Box. I want to take this moment to say that while I really like the US and UK as characters, I can’t help but feel that the UK would make a better anthropomorphic stereotype if he always had cups of tea…and was a little older and more proper than our overly optimistic pre-1960’s baggage America. I digress. France manages to capture Hetalia…big surprise. I would wonder about the developmental state of any country who couldn’t catch Hetalia at this point….or better yet, a country who captured him and then kept him.

Mikey! I think he likes it!
So, naturally, the Allies take their pasta loving hostage and feed him dog food. Hetalia manages one of the most adorable dog impressions, but alas since he is a gourmet, the dog food was found less than satisfactory. Back in the #uck box? Germany has a look of neither surprise nore joy…merely disdain. Then low and behold due to Hetalia’s stupidity German is caught by the Allies. Um, ok….not in my history book, but he’s German, he’ll like getting tied up. Some other antics ensue, someone threatens to kill Hetalia, France goes covert in drag and tries to offer him sexual favors, America is chipper, UK has south park brows….the usual.

German porn moment of shame
Insert your own German porn joke here…they’re all good. Hetalia accuses Germany of having “all sorts of weird DVDs and books” in at his place. Instead of refuting this….like a real German…he cowers under a halo of purple squiggles. Then it’s chibitalia time. Hetalia is still in drag. No surprises there and Holy Roman Empire is still pining for him with big blue longing eyes…again, no surprises. Hetalia manages to be hungry and painfully adorable so HRE gives him food. Which the gourmet finds unfit. Spain picks up little Hetalia and tosses him into a room….to be hungry. Then Japan gets a phone call from Hetalia. Hetalia screams on the other line that he needs help. We get a calm “wakarimashta” from the stoic crooning Japan. I really enjoyed Japan in the first episode. America blathers on about being the hero and saving the world….then we have Japan “I agree with America.” I was on the floor in a tizzy. Whatever a tizzy is.
Ok, I only pick on Germany so much because I come from a long lineage of creepy German relatives. It’s awesome when you’re getting ready for thanksgiving and cousin Berndt decides that it’s time to shave his legs while watching TV. Overall, this episode was the most compact and fluid so far. It barely takes a second seat to the Austria episode….barely. I really look forward to Hetalia episodes. I feel like despite the 5 minute runtime, they manage to fit in a decent amount of wandering plot and some really tight jokes. Two thumbs up.

Aah, I really like your reviews, first of all! I’m glad you say so much about each episode etc etc…
In Chibitalia, I believe its because of Italy’s voice and behavior that Hungary, Austria and HRE all think that he is a girl, and so that is why they have him wearing a dress. (Its more clear in the manga, but what isn’t when it comes to Hetalia ^^; )
