Axis Powers Hetalia 07 – cross dressing chibitalia
Would you like to super size that?
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Americans are created hungry, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Soda, Directness and the pursuit of Hamburgers.
Ok ok, all jokes aside, it’s true. America is a wonderful country, but we tend to wage cultural warfare in other countries not by disagreeing with them….but by slowly building a starbucks here….then a McDonalds there….until a part of America is in each and every major city around the globe. Oh silly Hetalia, you called us out on that one. So this episode starts out with America having a serious chowfest over a small mountain of hamburgers. He becomes increasingly incoherent between bites while shouting about justice and saving the world! Naturally, America’s surrogate mother the UK decided to don man brows and do his best Adolf impersonation while telling the US to chew with his mouth closed. Oh and America gets a good “I WILL BE THE HERO” in before the episode is over.
I’ve got a burning antisemitic question!
Teenage mutant ninja Frenchmen.
Soon after we are introduced to Hetalia’s brother…..southern Italy. While the girls were wiping drool from their mouths and trying to decided how to start their next brotherly love fan fiction, I was noting how similar the two boys were. They both have the signature idiot curl…….and then S. Italy opened his mouth.
And hilarious rude directness came out. I am not quite sure why he decided to call Germany a potato freak. But if you’re talking about produce then yes, German cuisine does require a vast amount of potato. Wouldn’t a veiner schnitzel or a bratwurst gag work too? Oh well. S. Italy decides that he abhors Germany and must fling colorful verbal insults at him. France drops in very randomly….which scares S. Italy into hiding behind Germany and then France yelps and hides from Germany. Oh the Irony.
This inspires Hetalia to discuss his bromance crush on Germany. He talks of how Germany has muscles and is really a nice guy. He’s just misunderstood. This prompts S. Italy to ask Hetalia for praise also. Hetalia recedes into the background and bluntly hints that that just wasn’t true. So, like any good Italian relative S. Italy gives Hetalia the boot. No pun intended.
Hetalia in dress makes Holy Roman Empire feel funny
Chibitalia time….
This chibitalia was strange. My first impression was the Hetalia was cross dressing and cleaning. Then Holy Roman Empire comes home and wonders why Hetalia is there. Holy Roman Empire proceeds to blush and pester Hetalia like school kids. Then Holy Roman Empire fluffs a pink pillow and rolls on the bed in delight. This prompts young Austria to say “pipe down.”
hm…..does anyone know what to make of this? I mean it was adorable…but odd…..and a little BL.
Then there’s an ominous shot of a rotary dial phone….dun dun duuuuuhn! Episode previews for 5 minute episodes seems a little excessive, but whatever.
Overall, Hetalia is enjoyable. I haven’t read the manga so I’m pretty detached from some of the gags. Several other bloggers either talked about how this was an amazing episode or a terrible episode….I felt that it was merely a good one. Last weeks was more interesting to me personally, but I wouldn’t say that this weeks was bad. Although, the chibitalia moments were….confusing. The show does have a really good energy and the way they orchestrate each ep is like a really really short sketch comedy show. I love the breaks when chibi characters pop up and say “Hetalia.”
What I wish I hadn’t bumped into while doing research for this episode:
1. The geographical countries of Spain and Italy having intercourse (it can’t be unseen).
2. America feeling up Britain while holding a McDonalds bag (it was poorly drawn).
3. A yaoi fanfic that crossed America with Bandit Keith from Yu Gi Oh (hilarious, but wrong).

Well, actually, Holy Empire doesn’t know that Chibitalia’s really a guy. He thinks Chibitalia’s a ’she’ and kinda has a crush on ‘her’ … Aha ~
Fast food wasn’t an American stereotype back during WWII.
“[McDonalds] began in 1940. . . . Their introduction of the “Speedee Service System” in 1948 established the principles of the modern fast-food restaurant.”
I have a feeling Hetalia is misrepresenting history…
@saimaisama: Thank you very much for clearing that up.
@Baka-Raptor: yeah…I kind of sort of get the feeling that historical accuracy might be less important than perpetuating stereotypes and pointing out cultural hang ups. ^_^
